Father, You are worthy of our praise at all times. We are grateful for the fact that we know You are working when we see it and when we do not. Lord, we confess that as we look at the events of our country this week, we are at times confused or frustrated, or grieved by all that we see around us. Father, help us to have Your mind and Your heart as we look at all that is happening around us. God, would You give us Your compassion to see the hurt of so many in our land. You say blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted… God, give us comfort as we mourn with those mourning throughout our land.
You say blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfied… God give us a hunger and thirst to see Your righteousness rain down in our land.
You say blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons and daughters of God. God give us the courage to be those who would make for peace in our land. Give us the fortitude to stand up and fight for those who need a voice. God, give us the strength to comfort those who are hurting. God give us Your wisdom to see through all of the distraction and all of the mess and all of the hurt and all of the garbage and to see with Your eyes. To have Your heart for our country.
1 Timothy 2:1-4
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Father, we pray for our president. We pray for our president-elect. We pray for all those serving in Congress. Lord, we lift up those who are leading our land and we pray that you would give them Your wisdom. Would You help them to lead with courage and with peace and with unity?
Lord, we would pray for all those whose actions are seeking to harm others. We pray for each of those who chose the wrong this week. God, we pray for protection. God, we pray for a change of heart. God, we pray that your Holy Spirit would break through with clarity to convict and to change and to minister to those who are so angry. God, we know that Your kindness is meant to lead us to repentance (Romans 2:4). In the midst of anger and pain and sadness would You give us Your kindness towards one another. Would Your kindness lead others to turn from their sin and to turn towards you?
Where there is judgment would there be compassion. Where there is strife would there be peace. Where there is hate would there be love. And where there is injustice would we see Your righteousness.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
Despite what we see, despite what we feel, despite what we hear, we know that we can trust You and we choose to place our trust and our faith and our hope in the name of the Lord our God. We know that you are a strong tower. We know that you are a refuge for the broken. We know that you are a shield around the righteous. So would you show yourself strong in the events of our country? Would you repair what appears to be beyond repair? Would you move mountains that have yet to move? Would you make a way where there seems to be no way? Would your gospel break through. Would Jesus Christ be the only banner that is lifted high above us? And would you be glorified in our lives and in our country and in our world?
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
